VLC - Free Video and Audio Player

Picture
Video's come in many different formats and it can be frustrating when your computer doesn't have the right player.  It's not ideal to have 3 or 4 different video players on your computer either. VLC is a great solution, it plays all audio and video formats.
Hint: If you can't install VLC onto your school computer you can run the program off your USB.

Thought Boxes

Picture
Thought Boxes s a task management service that uses a mind mapping interface.  You can create to-do lists and organize them into groups or categories.  I recommend this if you want something to just organize your thoughts. Otherwise I would recommend a program like Springpad or Evernote which have features that allow you to create tasks.

Richard Bryne Favourite Tech Resources

Richard Bryne writes a blog that I really enjoying following.  He is constantly blogging about new free technology tools for teachers in the classroom. What I like about his blog is that he doesn't assume you are a tech wiz and is very encouraging in his approach.  His website contains links to free teaching resources.

Professional Development

ThinkWave

Picture
This website helps you keep your grade-book electronic.  There are a lot of websites similar to this, but this is the best one that I have discovered thus far.  I've outlined some of the best features below

-You can create classes and then invite parents and students to join so they can view their own grades.  Parents and students can be invited separately. It is easy to reset their passwords if they lose track.
- ThinkWave is easily customizable.  You can customize your grading scales, points-weight equivalent, view and they way your classes are grouped.
- You can add comments to assignments.  I use electronic rubrics, I copy and paste my comments into ThinkWave so that students/parents can then view them.   This is also very handy when it comes to report writing. You can just click on the student and then all their comments appear on one page
- You can export - a very handy feature for when it comes to report writing.

- You can keep attendance records.
- You can generate a report card.
